2018 in Enid: A Look Back

The calendar has turned to 2019 and your friends at Visit Enid are looking forward to the new year with much anticipation. We hope you are as well.

Let’s take one final look back at 2018 and see some of Enid’s big announcements and some events Visit Enid was involved in during 2018.

For the second straight year a film made in Enid will make its debut at the Sundance Film Festival. “Wildlife” gained critical acclaim in early 2018, while “To the Stars” will debut later this month at the prestigious film festival in Park City, Utah.

Enid’s status as a rising arts community continues to grow. New murals in the Enid landscape include Enid Woman, Owl Cigar, David’s Doodles, Meadowlake Train Tunnel, Spinning Wheel, and the Stairway Science Mural at Leonardo’s Children’s Museum.

An independent consulting firm hired to conduct Travel Market Research on Enid surveyed visitors and potential visitors as well as local residents, community leaders and hoteliers. Based on this comprehensive study, the visioning process is underway to continue the process of growing our city.

The first Enid Comic Con was two days of toys, comics, costumes and Cos play at the CNB Center. The event was so successful, the second annual Enid Comic Con will be held August 3-4, 2019.

Enid’s first Christmas in the Park drew around 2,500 people over 3 Saturday nights. Around 300 children who put return addresses on their letter to Santa received a letter from Santa.

Construction began on a new Best Western Glo in downtown Enid. The 96-room hotel is scheduled for a summer 2019 opening.

Chisholm Trail Partnership received three Red Bud Awards for Best Media Coverage, Best Partnership and Best Single Sheet Brochure. The Red Bud is the highest honor given in Oklahoma tourism.

Enid Sports announced plans to build a competitive soccer complex on the west side of Enid. The goal is to be operational by the summer of 2020

The Chisholm Trail Coalition purchased a 22-passenger trolley car, using it for tours in and around Enid, including a Christmas Lights tour, a downtown architecture tour and a tour up and down the Chisholm Trail.

The 10th anniversary edition of the NJCAA Division II World Series at David Allen Memorial Ballpark ended with the first title-clinching walk-off home run since the Series has been in Enid.

Professional football is coming to Enid, as the Champions Indoor Football league announced the Oklahoma Flying Aces as its newest expansion franchise. The Flying Aces begin play in March 2019 at the CNB Center.

4R Kids Mini Golf opened in March, featuring 18 holes highlighted by beautiful landscaping, waterfalls, ponds and a butterfly garden on the west side of the course.

Construction began for Enid’s first craft brewery. The Enid Brewing Company in downtown Enid is scheduled to open Spring 2019 and will use locally-raised grains in all its beers.

The Sooner State Kennel Club held its 75th anniversary show in October at the Chisholm Trail Expo Center.

Visit Enid hired a PR Firm to assist with getting the word out about Enid, its attractions and events. Due to its efforts, Enid had just under $173K in earned media value and almost 20 million potential impressions in the first three months of use.

Based on the results from the Travel Research study, Visit Enid also serves as the Enid Sports Commission, with an emphasis on attracting more sports tourism to Enid.

Klemme Gallery & Event Space opened in November as a gallery for local and regional artists and a space available for weddings, receptions and more.

Data from Smith Travel Research show hotel occupancy is up nearly 18 percent and revenue is up over 16 percent, a positive sign that more visitors are coming to Enid.

Oklahoma State Emergency Managers Conference met in Enid for the second consecutive year

Hosted final Lt. Gov. Travel and Tourism Summit of Todd Lamb’s career in October

Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma held its annual convention “You Shall Be my Witness” in Enid in November

AIA Oklahoma Conference on Architecture held its 2018 annual conference “Blueprint for a Better Oklahoma” in Enid in November

A 55-member RV touring group spent three days here in April

The Oklahoma Municipal League held its annual State Mayor’s Conference in June

Intl Texas Longhorn Association brought its show to Oklahoma and Enid for the first time in October.

Oklahoma State Games Tennis Tournament held for first time outside of OKC in Enid
